Mushrooms

Mushrooms or Toadstools?

Mushroom

As I was heading out to pick raspberries this afternoon, I discovered mushrooms growing in the yard.  I took a tour, and found three different kinds!  So I snapped a few pictures, and decided to do a little research.  Wow, did I learn a few interesting things…where was I in Biology class??

The part of the mushroom that we see is only the “fruit,” produced to grow high enough to release spores that will be blown away in the wind instead of falling straight Mushroomsdown to the ground.  The real “working” part of the mushroom body is made up of a web of tiny filaments hiding underground, in wood, or rotting
plant material.  The body itself, that part we can’t see, is normally spread out over a much larger area than the small space taken up by the
mushroom we see.  It’s a whole other world hidden from our eyes!  The only way we know it’s there (if we know about mushroom life cycles in the first place), is when the mushroom Mushroompops up.  In order for that to happen, the unseen body of the mushroom needs to store enough nutrients and essential compounds, and conditions need to be just right.

Our spiritual lives grow within us like the body of the mushroom, largely unseen by others.  When we feed our spirits on the Word of God, spend time in His presence, and let Him change us daily into more of His likeness, we are more likely to “produce fruit in keeping with repentance” (Mark 3:8, Luke 3:8).  We should always be growing and maturing in our knowledge of and relationship with God.  He loves us, and only wants His best for us!

Jesus said, in Luke 6:45,

A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart.  What you say flows from what is in your heart.

Are your words and actions evidence of a good heart?  You can begin again today! Ask God to help you grow His way, becoming who He created you to be.

Purify me from my sins, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow…Create in me a clean heart, O God (Psalm 51:7, 10).
